From The Peak

(2 Minute Read)

Doulos exists to equip our students with the skills, character, and relationship with God they'll need to impact their communities for His glory. While this may sound inspiring, following Christ and advancing His kingdom can be an uphill battle. To help our students experience their strength when working together with each other and God, our 10th-grade class climbs the highest peak in the Caribbean, Pico Duarte. This month, you’ll hear directly from one of our 10th graders as he shares his experiences and what they meant to him.

Before I started my hike up Pico, I thought it wouldn’t be that hard. I expected an easy, fun hike that would eventually teach me useful skills for life. In part, I was right; I did learn a lot along the way, but the hike was much more demanding than I anticipated.

At first, the hike started out easy, but as we progressed, it became harder and harder. There was a point where I was extremely exhausted, and this was made worse by the rain and hail pouring down on us. Honestly, that was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done. However, after all the hard work, reaching the top of Pico made it all worth it. The view was beautiful, but the best part was the feeling of accomplishment and success after completing the hike on my own two feet.

Additionally, the Pico Duarte experience helped me grow as a person. Throughout the trip, I came to understand that giving is one of the most satisfying and gratifying things you can do. It doesn’t matter if it’s a simple granola bar or a helping hand in a tough spot; the smile on someone’s face after you’ve helped them is better than any gift you can receive.
