Honoring Our Incredible Staff

The foundation of Doulos is God's faithful presence, guidance, and provision, AND our incredible staff. As we closed out the school year the staff voted on who they felt embodied our Codes of Character. Here's who they chose and why:

Doulos of the Year

Laurie Machjer

"Laurie comes to Doulos every single day to serve and better the Kingdom and this is seen through everything she does here. She serves teachers, students and their families constantly and no matter the hard conversations, she's always glorifying the Lord and seeks Him."

"Laurie has a done fabulous job in Doulos. She is amazing at being all the codes of character of Doulos. She represents a Doulos inside and outside of school!!"

"Laurie deserves this award. As a new staff member I would not have made it this year without her. She truly cares about each staff and student. She always takes time to make sure we are okay and helps whenever is needed. She truly exemplifies the skills of a scholar in her work at Doulos."

Relational Award

Diane Langman

"Diane has jumped in with both feet and has been an amazing source of encouragement to so many on staff this year. Even though she is in her first year at Doulos and the DR, she is a great source of refreshment through her relational gifts."

"Diane goes above and beyond to check in on staff members outside of the school. Diane builds relationships with all staff, regardless of her role. She makes an effort to check in on individuals every week, and seeks staff out to learn more about them and love them."

Revolutionary Award

Kristen DelToro

"Every year she catapults Doulos into deeper excellence as she grows in her expertise on movement, special education, data tracking, and ways to reach the tricky kids of our school."

"Kristen always makes time to talk to students and encourage them. She works hard and encourages teachers as well. She has helped my daughter in many ways and I am grateful that she has been there for her to go to when she needs to."

"Kristen continues to run a program that is unique to this country. It provides solid paths of growth for our students and help them hit developmental needs that they would never achieve otherwise."

Servant Leader Award

Lucy Lara

"She has been a servant leader in being able to serve others without the intention of being recognized."

"She is always with a heart ready to serve even when she leaves her work role, she has been a servant leader in being able to serve others without the intention of being recognized. She does it with a smile and quickly, putting serving as a priority."

Perseverant Award

Sadie Johnson

"I think Sadie has been perseverant through this year. She has remained a constant for her students this second semester in particular with many uncontrollable and unforeseen circumstances including have many adults and assistants in and out of her classroom. She has somehow managed to keep her students learning even with all the things that happened."

"Sadie has shown great perseverance by staying with her class for a 2nd year. When things were challenging, she continued to persevere by shepherding and loving her students. Through this, Sadie tangibly showed her students how Christ pursues His children."

Courageous Award

Elizabeth Escalante

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

"Elizabeth E is bold and confident in living for Christ. She is not ashamed of the Gospel but she lives her faith in a vibrant way through her teaching, her conversations, and her worship. She leads with boldness and builds others up. She does not shy away from hard conversations but handles them with grace and truth."

"Elizabeth stepped into a new role this year with much courage, relying on the strength of the Lord to carry her through."

Wise Award

Michael Beuhler

"He always gives wise advice"

"He is very wise to make decisions always reflecting the love of Christ at all times."

A Note From Josh

Doulos Executive Director

(2-Minute Read)

There are so many times that I am on campus and I think about ALL the people God used to bring the important mission of Doulos to life over the past 20 years. The staff and their supporters, the student sponsors, the mission teams, the financial supporters, board members, and of course the local Doulos families and the local church. I think about ALL the sacrifice and miracles that have brought us to where we are today, and I am constantly grateful to get to do my part in continuing the work God has for Doulos.

I am a historical thinker, so I’d love to briefly share how God gave me a deep heart for Doulos. I started out as a Doulos dad, and quickly fell in love with the way that my own kids were being educated and equipped. My family was drawn in by the same incredible community that has welcomed so many of you into the Doulos family.

I fell in love with, and now consider it a great honor to guard “The 5 Pillars of Doulos:” mixed socio-economics, focus on discipleship, calling prep for students, expeditionary learning, and a focus on Dominican students who WILL be the next generation of leaders. It is such a unique, challenging, and powerful combination that makes Doulos the special place it is. All these things came together and created a permanent place for Doulos in my heart.

During the reunion celebration last month, it was such a gift to reconnect with others who also have the same heart for Doulos. We celebrated and remembered the past, and couldn’t help but excitedly talk about the future. Over the past 20 years, Doulos has grown from a vision to a reality, and in each season God has been faithful. Now, we stand in awe as God brings together the people and resources to ensure that Doulos will not just survive, but will continue to blossom and flourish in the next chapters.

I’m so grateful that you are part of what God has done and is continuing to do through Doulos. More than anything, I’m grateful that, like me, you have allowed Doulos to have a special place in your heart.
